Job Scams

During my first year at UNR, I received a job opportunity that almost seemed legit. Remote, flexible, student-friendly, and good pay. Obviously, one can see right through fraud. So, I chose to indulge myself to see what it was about. The job consisted of wiring money after being sent money from “manager”, but you had to provide your credit, debit, and/or bank account/routing number. It is crazy to think that I knew of 3 people who fell for it and got their money stolen. Despite there being prevention set up on our student email accounts for spammers, yet they still manage to bypass the firewalls in place. Typically, no job descriptions are sent through email if you have not applied. During the application process is when any of that is disclosed and they only have your email because of the “@unr.edu”. If the website is not secure, it is usually a clear indication that it is not a trustworthy site to give any of your information.

You’re so right, I remember in high school we got scam email and mail from a company under the name of “Vector” something. Students would give up their information and data and never hear about any employment. We were easier targets because we were 16 and 17. It seems like cybersecurity will never truly stop these trolls!

The funny thing is that you are not the first person to spell me about this, or something similar. I am glad you did not fall for it!

There have been a couple instances where my friends get fake accounts made of them in where they would ask their followers for money. To no surprise people would be worried for the “fake” account thinking it was their loved one. It’s almost a mockery of someone’s persona.

I, too, recall when this happened! No one seems to be safe out there. Did you know if the accounts ever got taken down?

I’ve had my identity stolen twice now. I am in the midst of getting a new name, social and internet based accounts. I recommend to have everything as secure as possible. You can never be too safe. Therefore, I know what’s it’s like to have all the above happen to you.

I am saddened to hear about your situation. It must be stressful and a tedious process to endure. I know how hard it must be to change your whole life once even TWICE.

The cellphone I had two years ago was tapped by my ex wife. The entire time I had no idea. It is vital you always check. Personally I didn’t find out until it was time for a phone upgrade and Verizon told me.

Oh goodness tio! I did not know about this. Awareness of phone wiring or taping is so crucial. Especially nowadays there are fake AI facetime calls. So bizarre!
